Call For Proposals

Do you believe that excellent teaching ignites curiosity and fosters transformative learning experiences? Are you eager to share your innovative ideas, effective strategies, and success stories with fellow educators?  If so, then the stage is set for you to shine at the Plater-Moore Conference on Teaching and Learning, hosted by IUPUI’s Center for Teaching and Learning.

Join us as we bring together a community of educators from all IU campuses committed to creating inclusive, welcoming, and engaging learning environments that promote student success. The goals of this conference are to:

  • Promote a culture of teaching and learning that values inclusion, collegiality/belonging, equity, and continuous improvement
  • Provide opportunities for educators to share best practices and innovative ideas for teaching and learning
  • Promote collaboration and/or interprofessional dialogue among educators from diverse departments and disciplines
  • Provide opportunities for professional development and networking

In this call for proposals, we invite you to share your stories of persistence, success, innovation, and evidence-based practices that exemplify the pursuit of teaching excellence.

Proposal Review Process

  • All proposals are due by Sunday, October 22, 11:59 p.m.
  • Proposals will be anonymously reviewed by two to three peers. Please do not identify yourself or your co-authors in the session information.
  • Once notified of acceptance, presenters and co-presenters will be required to confirm presentation title, abstract, and session timeslot to be included in the conference program.

We invite proposals in the following topical areas. If your proposal addresses multiple topic areas, please indicate this on the proposal submission form. The proposal review and selection committee will tag sessions by topic(s) in the conference program.

Session Types

What would be the best format to present your work and engage your audience? Please select the session type from the list below to showcase your work.

A 30-minute session where you describe your innovative research or experimentation in teaching and learning, demonstrate your strategies if possible, and reflect on lessons learned. The session should include active interaction with and among participants.

Your session description should include:

  • teaching and learning goal(s),
  • a description of what you did and why,
  • evidence of impact on your students’ learning, engagement, equity, and sense of belonging,
  • what you learned from the experience,
  • how you used teaching and learning scholarly literature to inform your process, and
  • your planned interactions with and among participants.

A 30-minute session including a brief presentation of your case and followed by a discussion with participants exploring aspects of the case from different perspectives and in the context of one or more of the conference topics. Cases should productively address the discussion of one or more of the conference topics and be inclusive so that instructors and staff in various disciplines can meaningfully contribute and gain useful insights.

Your session description should include:

  • a brief write-up of your case, including the situation and background information, how you used teaching and learning scholarly literature to inform your case,
  • the thought process of developing your solutions, the outcome, and what you learned from the case,
  • your plan for a discussion,
  • what makes your case interesting and applicable to the wider teaching and learning community, and
  • its impact on your students’ learning, engagement, equity, and sense of belonging.

A 60-minute session focused on an innovative or emerging teaching and learning strategy or approach related to one or more of the conference topic areas. Workshops should include specific outcomes, guided hands-on activities, and the expectation that the participants will develop a product or action plan to implement the strategy.

Your session description should include:

  • a description of your workshop,
  • learning outcomes and participant deliverables,
  • potential to improve student learning, engagement, equity, and sense of belonging, 
  • how you used teaching and learning scholarly literature to inform your workshop, and
  • a description of the workshop structure and participant activities.

A 60-minute session focused on one of the conference topic areas. Panels can include instructors, staff, and students. The discussion should feature no more than four panelists and a moderator and present diverse perspectives, insights, and expertise. Please prepare to allow for audience questions in the final 5-10 minutes. 

Your session description should include:

  • an overview of the topic area(s) the panel will explore,
  • how the panel discussion would provide insight into improving student learning, engagement, equity, and sense of belonging,
  • description of the roles, experience, and perspectives of the panel members without identifying them by name.

A 15-minute session (10 minutes presenting and 5 minutes for questions) that includes story sharing or “show and tell” options.  

  • Story Sharing: A chance for you to share a personal story of a meaningful moment or experience that made you rethink something about your teaching and/or your student’s learning, how you responded, and what difference it made for your students. The story should include a takeaway for instructors from various disciplines.  
  • Show and Tell: A session showing a teaching tool such as an assignment, project, group activity, or student feedback tool that others in and outside your discipline could find useful. Tell us the background and purpose of the tool, how you have used it with your students, what you have learned, and how it could be adapted to other course contexts. 

Your session description should include:

  • a brief overview of your story or tool,
  • how it connects to improving student learning, engagement, equity, and sense of belonging,
  • why it would be of interest to the larger teaching and learning community, and
  • audience takeaway(s).

  • Session description (maximum 500 words): Proposals will be anonymously reviewed. Please do not include your name or co-presenters’ names in the session description.

    • Session description: Refer to the Session Types above for specific requirements.

Proposal Review Criteria

Peer reviewers will use the following review criteria:

  • Abstract provides a clear and complete description of the session.
  • 1 – 2 takeaways for participants are actionable and achievable for the chosen session type.
  • Session description meets all Session Type requirements as stated in the Call for Proposals.
