Are you responsible for creating a new asynchronous online course or revising an existing one?
Will you be teaching that course in the next academic year?
If you answered "yes" to both of those questions, the Online Course Design and Development Bootcamp may be for you. The Bootcamp is an 8-week intensive, interactive online course offered by the IUPUI Center for Teaching and Learning in the spring and summer sessions. It provides
a structured introduction to online course design theory, research, and practice, including visual design, accessibility, usability, and media use and development.
weekly assignments where you will create parts of your asynchronous online course and share them with facilitators and peers for feedback and discussion.
the experience of being an online student in an interactive, asynchronous, online course.
Participants are expected to make active progress on their course development every week. Previous participants report spending at least 6-7 hours each week working with Bootcamp materials, interacting with other faculty participants, and developing their online course. Course activity occurs throughout the week so you will need to check in regularly.
The Final Project is due the week after the end of the Bootcamp. The Final Project includes a welcoming, usable, and accessible Canvas course site complete with your course structure, student orientation/getting started information, syllabus, and at least 1 week of your course assignments, instruction, and content plus your plan for completing your course development.
Participants who successfully complete the Bootcamp will earn the Designing an Online Course badge from the IUPUI Center for Teaching and Learning.
Frequently Asked Questions
About me and my course
Do I need to be full-time faculty? No, adjunct faculty are welcome to participate! You do need to have the approval of your department to develop or revise an online course. The Bootcamp isn't appropriate for teaching assistants.
Do I need to have a real course or can I just make a hypothetical course? You do need to be working on a real course that you will teach within the next academic year. A participant creating a hypothetical course takes a seat from someone with a hard deadline for their course development. If you're interested in a general overview of online course design and development, you may find the Teaching Online Series helpful.
Does it have to be an asynchronous online course or can it be a flipped course? Your course does need to be an asynchronous online course with no more than one required real-time meeting (in-person or video) per month. Flipped classes and hybrid classes meeting weekly/bi-weekly build community in the physical classroom while much of the Bootcamp is focused on online interaction between students and between students and the instructor. If your course is meeting in real time more than once a month, please feel free to contact the Center for Teaching and Learning and schedule a consultation and we'll be happy to help you individually. We are in the process of putting together a boot camp for flipped classes and blended classes meeting weekly/bi-weekly. More information on that course will be published when it is available.
What if I have a non-facilitated or self-paced training course? Much of the Bootcamp is focused on designing for interaction between students and between students and the instructor. If you have a non-facilitated or self-paced training course, please feel free to contact the Center for Teaching and Learning and schedule a consultation and we'll be happy to help you individually.
About the Bootcamp
Are there any in-person meetings required? There are no in-person meetings. There will be 3 optional video conference meetings which will be recorded for those that cannot attend.
Do I need any special equipment? Yes, you will need access to a webcam and a microphone (preferably a headset style mic) and a newer computer (< 3 years old). Older computers normally do not have the processing power to record and edit videos, which participants will do for 2 assignments.
See the CTL Event Listing to register for the Boootcamp. If it is not currently open for registration, check back in November for spring and April for summer.
