The CTL and the Graduate Office invites applications for the position of CIRTL Graduate Teaching Assistant to assist in planning, creating, and facilitating teaching-related professional development programming for graduate students and postdocs in the CIRTL at IUPUI program.
The CTL and CIRTL at IUPUI program will offer several workshops, webinars, and learning opportunities this spring for graduate students and postdocs to develop teaching skills.
The CTL organizes the annual IUPUI TA Orientation, a one-day event intended to prepare first-time TAs to teach in the classroom or lab. The orientation also introduces TAs to important university policies and procedures and includes a Resource Fair where TAs can meet representatives from the various units and offices that support graduate and undergraduate student success on campus.
The CTL's Certificate in College Teaching program (CCT) is for TAs who are interested in reflecting on and further developing their teaching skills in a systematic fashion. (The CCT is not a teacher licensing program, nor is it credit bearing. It will not appear on participants' transcripts but can and should be listed on their CVs.)
IUPUI and Indiana University, Bloomington have recently joined the Center for Integration of Research, Teaching, and Learning (CIRTL), a network of 46 universities dedicated to the advancement of undergraduate education in STEM and other disciplines through the professional development of future faculty. CIRTL accomplishes this advancement through the core ideas of Teaching-as-Research, Learning Communities, and Learning Through Diversity.. CIRTL at IUPUI is a learning community of graduate students and postdocs to engage in the discussion and development of reflective and evidence-based teaching approaches with strategies that leverage student diversity and shared learning experiences. Graduate students can earn CIRTL Associate, CIRTL Practitioner, and CIRTL Scholar certifications through a free, self-paced badging program in Canvas. Students can use these badges on their CVs and in online career networking tools to showcase for prospective employers their CIRTL accomplishments. Jointly led by the IUPUI Graduate Office, the Center for Teaching and Learning and the Office of Vice Chancellor for Research, CIRTL at IUPUI invites graduate students and postdocs to take advantage of a wide variety of local and cross-network CIRTL online programming. Visit the CIRTL at IUPUI for more information about programming and certifications!
In addition to the annual TA Orientation and the Certificate in College Teaching program, the Center for Teaching and Learning provides the following services to IUPUI graduate students who teach:
TAs interested in CTL workshops and events are encouraged to sign up for the CTL's weekly e-newsletter, CTL Happenings.
The CTL offers teachers of graduate pedagogy courses the opportunity to bring their classes to the CTL for a short tour of the facility and an introduction to the services that CTL provides. In addition, graduate students will be led through a reflective group activity focused on their teaching, the results of which will be shared with the course instructor for use in later class sessions. For more information, contact the CTL directly.
TAs need to be aware of both university- and department-level policies that impact their teaching. This list of university-level policy resources is intended to help TAs familiarize themselves with IUPUI policies. TAs should check with their departments and/or advisors for further policy information.
