Technical Instructions and Tool Overviews

• Using Zoom to record video

  • You have likely used Zoom for meetings but you can also have a "meeting with yourself" and record both your video and your screen where you can share slides, websites, or other applications.
  • Choose the "record to cloud" option to save your video directly to Kaltura.
  • You must be connected to the internet to record with Zoom.

• Using Kaltura Personal Capture to record video

  • Kaltura Personal Capture will allow you to record your webcam and your screen where you can share slides, websites, or other applications.
  • It is only available for Windows and Mac. You have to download the Personal Capture App from Kaltura: My Media in Canvas or from Kaltura MediaSpace.
  • It is a bit more complicated than Zoom but it has some additional picture-in-picture and slide organization features.
  • You cannot embed another video inside a slide this way. It will look like you can, but the video will not play when you try to record. If you need to include another video, please use Zoom.
  • You can record with Personal Capture when you are not connected to the internet and upload your recordings to Kaltura later. 

• Recording directly in PowerPoint 365 or 2019 and exporting your recording as an mp4 video file

  • You must have Office 2019 or Office 365. This is not something you can do with older versions of PowerPoint.
  • If you will reuse the same presentation later, this way allows you to add, remove, or change individual slides without having to re-record the entire presentation. 
  • You always want to export narrated presentations as an mp4 video file and not give students a PowerPoint file with audio recordings in it. If you want to give them the slides as well, you can give them the file without audio or notes pages as a PDF.
  • You cannot embed another video inside a slide this way. It will look like you can but when you save it as an mp4 video file the video will not be included. If you need to include another video, please use Zoom.
  • You will need to manually upload your video to Kaltura. See uploading a previously recorded video for instructions.

• Checking and editing video captions in Kaltura (remember that the automatic mechanical captions do not appear immediately)

• Editing your video using:

  • The built-in Kaltura editor (video tutorial) - this is available in edit mode in Kaltura: My Media. It is very basic but allows you to trim videos and remove bits from the middle.
  • Adobe Rush (free through IUWare) which has many more features but has more of a learning curve.
  • The built-in Windows 10 Video Editor (from Teachers.tech)
