Project Title: Mixed Methods Research in Technology and Health Graduate Certificate

Abstract:
The use of mixed methods (MM), or the integration of qualitative and quantitative methodologies, has increased exponentially within the health sciences, social sciences, and engineering and technology leading to the development of “best practices” for the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation. In today’s highly competitive research environment, individuals with formal training in the integration of multiple research methods will be highly sought after within several research areas and more competitive applying for advanced research training and research funding. Therefore, we propose to develop a graduate level research certificate on “Mixed Methods Research in Health and Technology” (tentatively titled), which graduate students may earn as an Area of Specialty designation on their transcripts. The curriculum will include 12 credit hours of interdisciplinary graduate studies, delivered online and focusing on qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methodologies. Student learning outcomes will be defined using the conceptual framework outlined by IUPUI Principles of Graduate and Professional Learning. Project outcomes will include a formal graduate-level certificate in research methodology and seminars delivered by preeminent researchers in MM research methods for IUPUI students and faculty.
