IUPUI’s student body has become increasingly diverse. However, students of color continue to face barriers in the classroom related to their sense of belonging, representation, and retention. The Teaching Towards Racial Equity Workshop Series, which is part of The White Racial Literacy Project, is designed for faculty who are currently teaching and are aspiring to promote racial equity in their courses. Whether you have encountered challenges related to racial equity in the classroom or you are new to this topic, we invite you to engage with colleagues. Participants will reflect on how their identities, lived experiences, and worldview impact their teaching and students’ learning. Participants will also have opportunities to refine their courses and implement strategies to achieve racial equity in the classroom.
By the end of the workshop series, participants will be better prepared to:
- examine their privileges and biases and their impact on student learning
- employ strategies to mitigate implicit bias and stereotype threat
- effectively respond to microaggressions and other disruptive behavior
- develop equitable and inclusive course materials
The 2019 Racial Equity Workshop Series will be held on the following dates from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.:
- Thursday, February 14
- Thursday, February 21
- Thursday, February 28
- Thursday, March 7
Participants will complete the following by the end of the workshop series:
- revised learning-centered syllabus
- revised assignment and associated rubric
- post-workshop series reflection
Eligibility
IUPUI, IUPUC, and IUFW faculty of all appointment types are welcome to apply. Faculty who are selected for the workshop series are expected to participate in all sessions.
