The E.C. Moore Symposium brings the Indiana higher education community together to examine teaching excellence and the instructional strategies employed in various disciplines to encourage student learning. The IUPUI Center for Teaching and Learning seeks proposals that address efforts to improve student learning and engagement, evidence-based practices in teaching, the scholarship of teaching and learning, the innovative use of instructional technology, and initiatives that promote excellence in teaching. Curriculum Enhancement Grant Symposium

Held to honor and celebrate the successes of the 2013 Curriculum Enhancement Grant (CEG) awardees, the 2014 CEG Symposium will feature a keynote address on Calibrated Peer Review®: Not Just Writing in the Discipline by Arlene Russell, Senior Lecturer, Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry and Department of Education, UCLA. Calibrated Peer Review® is a web-based instructional program that allows instructors to use writing-to-learn pedagogy in classes of any size. A drawing for five free copies of the book Engaging in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, a reception and poster presentations by 2013 CEG recipients will follow the keynote address.

Attending the CEG symposium is especially recommended to faculty who may be interested in submitting proposals for CEG funding in the future, but all faculty are encouraged to attend.

Teaching@IUPUI: Creating Rubrics

Using rubrics increases grading transparency, consistency, and efficiency while encouraging students to link assignments to learning objectives and become more critical assessors of their own work. However, many faculty feel that creating a rubric and using it effectively requires time and effort that they cannot spare. In this online mini-workshop, participants will learn some basic principles for quickly creating effective rubrics that will make assessing student work faster, more consistent, and more rewarding. Questions and discussion will be encouraged.
Assessing Writing Assignments for Non-native English Speaking Students in Your Classes

Do you have international students and other non-native speakers of English in your class? Do you wonder how, without significantly increasing your workload, you can assess writing assignments in a manner that acknowledges the difficulty non-native speakers may have? The international population is growing by leaps and bounds, and faculty need to approach writing assessment in a way that acknowledges challenges of writing in a student’s second, third, or even fourth language. This workshop will define the typical difficulties non-native speakers of English may have with writing and will illustrate, with examples assessment tools, effective pedagogical solutions for assessing writing assignments in any discipline or course level.
Questions addressed in this workshop include:
• What is good student writing, and what is truly important when evaluating a student’s paper?
• Why do some students who have been studying English for a long time still make the same mistakes?
• What pedagogical techniques can be implemented in assessment without spending significantly more time than with native English speaking students?

Electronic portfolios are becoming mainstream, emerging as a field of practice with theoretical underpinnings and scholarly research. In addition to providing a means for students to represent and demonstrate their learning, ePortfolios are associated with a set of powerful teaching and learning practices. When these practices are effectively deployed, ePortfolios support active learning, student engagement, reflection, integration of learning across the curriculum and co-curriculum, development of academic and professional identity, and meaningful assessment of student learning across degree and co-curricular programs. This workshop will introduce ePortfolio practice in the context of pedagogy, assessment, and student development in higher education. Come with questions and leave with ideas and resources available to support your own teaching and learning practices.

Information Literacy Workshop: Teaching Research Processes

All are invited to attend our first annual IUPUI Information Literacy Workshop “Teaching Research Processes” to explore how faculty and librarians can work together to devise ways to increase students’ ability to locate, evaluate, and use information. The workshop is next Friday. October 3, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. at Taylor Hall UC 104. There is no attendance fee. Breakfast will be provided along with lunch from City Barbeque.
Our speaker and program designer/coordinator is William Badke, Associate Librarian at Trinity Western University in British Columbia. He is the author of the 2012 book Teaching Research Process: The faculty role in the development of skilled student researchers. The fifth edition of his Research strategies: Finding your way through the information fog was released in January.

Held each fall, the WIMS conference provides a collegial and professional environment for faculty, residents and fellows, students, and staff to discuss career advancement, particularly issues of interest to women.
This year, Drs. Kelly Ward and Lisa Wolf-Wendel will lead participants in a conversation around work life integration, particularly in higher education and academic medicine. Attendees will identify how work and outside-of-work life overlap for different groups (faculty, students, staff, men, women). Multiple strategies for work life integration at different career stages and for different groups will be discussed.
Breakfast will be served at the event.
William M. Plater Institute on the Future of Learning

The William M. Plater Institute on the Future of Learning is IUPUI’s annual opportunity to focus on topics important to the future of higher education. This year’s Institute is entitled “Excellence in Higher Education: The Role of Online Education.” It will be held Thursday, October 23, 2014, from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm, in Campus Center Room 450.
The keynote speaker for the event is Dr. Rena Palloff. Dr. Palloff, a faculty member at the Fielding Institute, is one of the foremost authorities on online learning and author of several books including Lessons from the Virtual Classroom: Realities of Online Teaching and The Excellent Online Instructor: Strategies for Professional Development.
Whether you are new to online education, a veteran online educator, or are involved in the administration of online courses, the program will offer information, discussion, resources, and connections designed to move you to the next level.
