Image of Edward C. MooreEdward C. Moore, served as IUPUI dean of the faculties from 1973 until 1982. Prior to his work at IUPUI, Moore was chancellor of the Board of Higher Education for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Dean Moore was a prolific author. He wrote for many national journals and published four books on pragmatism. Additionally, he reviewed and edited numerous books on subjects that included English, literature, science, and philosophy. Moore was highly regarded by his IUPUI colleagues and his gifts of persuasion, wit, and candor were especially appreciated.

The proposal submission process for the 2009 E.C. Moore Symposium is now closed.

The Edward C. Moore Symposium on Teaching Excellence is one of IUPUI’s oldest public events, dating from the years of IUPUI’s inception. Named in honor of Edward C. Moore, former dean of the faculties, the symposium provides an opportunity for the university community to gather around to discuss academic issues of interest to all.

The 2009 E. C. Moore Symposium will continue to offer a variety of sessions that emphasize innovation and best practices. Today’s technology offers incredible opportunities to engage students in the classroom and beyond. Wikis, blogs, and social networking sites allow students to connect and collaborate in new and innovative ways. Applications such as web conferencing tools (e.g., Adobe Connect) can bring faculty and students together from far off locations. This year the E.C. Moore Symposium brings the IUPUI campus community together to consider the ways that technology is shaping the teaching and learning in the classroom and beyond.

The 2009 program will explore these and similar questions:

  • How can we successfully integrate instructional technology in classes to enhance students’ learning experiences?
  • What successful IT strategies are you employing to encourage student involvement?
  • What are innovative uses of technology that address the needs of diverse learners (e.g., first generation, international, underrepresented populations, students with disabilities, non traditional students)?
  • How can we assess the impact of technology on learning?
  • In what ways can technology improve access to education, other people, or global connections?
  • How can technology enhance social learning and promote social construction of knowledge?
  • How can social networking tools such as Facebook and MySpace be used to enhance learning?
  • How can technology be used to create communities of learners and scholars?
  • What challenges exist in using technology and how can they be addressed?
