It is estimated that students spend at least one to two hours a day on social networking websites and that over 95% of all students use sites such as Facebook and Twitter. Further, students report that they are engaging in highly creative activities on social networking sites including writing, art, and contributing to collaborative online projects whether or not these activities are related to schoolwork (National School Boards Association and Grunwald Associates LLC, 2009). Given this, what possibility might social networking hold in college teaching? During this session, participants will learn how two faculty members are incorporating social networking (Facebook and Twitter) in their teaching. Participants will have time to ask questions and engage with one another about the pros and cons of using social networking tools in higher education.
