The Edward C. Moore Symposium on Teaching Excellence is one of IUPUI’s oldest public events, dating from the years of IUPUI’s inception. Named in honor of Edward C. Moore, former dean of the faculties, the symposium provides an opportunity for the university community to gather around to discuss academic issues of interest to all.
The IUPUI Center for Teaching and Learning is accepting proposals for the 2010 Edward C. Moore Symposium on Teaching Excellence. The event will take place on Thursday, March 4, 2010. We hope you will consider submitting a proposal, and we encourage you to share this invitation and information with your colleagues.
In keeping with the long-standing tradition of gathering around a common academic issue, the Edward C. Moore Symposium will continue to offer a variety of sessions that emphasize innovation and best practices in teaching.
This year the E.C. Moore Symposium brings the IUPUI campus community together to examine teaching excellence and instructional strategies employed in various disciplines to encourage student learning. What teaching strategies are IUPUI faculty employing? How can these learning opportunities be translated to other fields of study?
The 2010 program will include 50-minute breakout sessions (possible formats include panel and roundtable discussions, lecture-discussion, interactive workshops, etc.) and poster presentations. Proposals from faculty who have won teaching awards, as well as those involving students in the presentation are also encouraged. We especially welcome proposals exploring these and similar questions, but proposals need not be limited to these topics:
The 2010 program will explore these and similar questions:
- What successful teaching strategies are you employing to encourage student engagement in the classroom?
- How can a specific teaching pedagogy from your discipline be translated to other disciplines?
- What strategies are found to increase student learning and success?
- How have student perspectives, partnerships, input, or feedback been used to make courses more effective?
- How is instructional technology being successfully integrated in courses to enhance students’ learning experiences?
- How can we assess the impact of teaching on student learning?
- What are the future directions in university-level teaching?
All proposals will be reviewed based on the following criteria:
- Clearly specified learning outcomes for the session
- Clearly stated teaching purpose or problem to be addressed
- Relevant conceptual or theoretical underpinnings
- New or creative approach on a topic of educational significance, building on what is known in the literature
- Summative or formative assessment measures used or planned
- Thoroughness, quality, and clarity of proposal
Online proposal submissions will begin Monday, November 2 and will be accepted until Friday, December 11. Applicants will be notified in late January 2010 of their status. If you have questions, please contact Jennifer Beasley at 317-274-1300 or jabeasl1@iupui.edu.
