Service Learning Assistant Program

Purpose

Service Learning Assistant (SLA) Scholarships are available to recognize IUPUI students who have been selected by faculty or professional staff to assist on implementing a service learning class, conducting research, or completing a service project in and with the community. Thus providing faculty with invaluable support with managing the logistics of a service-learning course while providing students with financial aid and valuable learning experiences. Priority is given to proposals that will increase the number of IUPUI students involved in community-based activities through service learning courses.

Funding
Funding for SLA Scholarships is made available on a competitive basis to support work in any of the following areas:

• Teaching: Offering a service learning course during the semester in which the scholarship is to be awarded. An SLA may serve as teaching assistant in a service learning class, coordinate details on service learning placements, or assist community agencies in hosting and monitoring students.
  
  
• Research: Designing and implementing a research project on the practice of service learning or conducting a community-based research project with a community organization. An SLA may serve as research assistant on the research project.
  
  
• Service: Providing professional expertise in collaboration with a community organization to meet the organization’s stated need. An SLA may assume coordinating duties related to the service project or serve as a liaison between campus and community organizations.

Scholarship
Service Learning Assistant Scholarships are awarded to selected students to support educational expenses (e.g., tuition, fees) at IUPUI. Scholarship monies are credited to the student’s account in the Bursar’s Office. Students are responsible for the impact an award may have on their account. If accounts have no balance due, a check will be mailed to the student’s home of record.

Scholarship amounts are based on the number of hours a student works per week with/for a professor as follows:

Fall or Spring semester
5 hours per week $750 per semester
10 hours per week $1,500 per semester
15 hours per week $2, 250 per semester
20 hours per week $3,000 per semester

One Summer Session (double for both sessions) (depending on availability of funds)
5 hours per week $300 per session
10 hours per week $600 per session
15 hours per week $900 per session
20 hours per week $1,200 per session
