II. Fall Semester: Evidence-Based Teaching in the Discipline
What Will Participants Learn?Participants will explore and apply evidence-based pedagogies in their teaching. By the end of the semester they will be able to:
- Describe the principles of how people learn and their significance for planning class or lab sessions.
- Summarize and present key findings from a literature review of evidence-based teaching practices in your discipline.
- Develop a class or lab lesson plan using backward design by integrating the principles of how people learn and evidence-based practices in your discipline.
- Observe a peer's teaching and provide formative feedback to him or her through a formal observation report.
- Reflect on the development of your teaching skills as a result of your Semester 2 experiences, update your preliminary teaching philosophy using suitable examples and evidence, and articulate a plan for improving your work in the classroom or lab.
Step 1: Exploring Evidence-Based Disciplinary Approaches to Teaching and Learning
- Attend the following cohort meetings:
- Evidence-Based Teaching Practices in Your Discipline
- Planning and Observing Teaching Sessions
- Attend TWO required webinar and workshop:
- Teaching Metacognitive Skills
- Drafting a Teaching Philosophy
- Attend ONE of the following in-person workshops:
- Global Learning
- Teaching in Stereo: Perspectives on Learner-Centered Instruction
Primary, lab, and recitation instructors:
- Using the Teaching Goals Inventory, develop a lesson plan for a class or lab session for the course you are currently teaching.
- Have your assigned cohort peer observe your teaching using your lesson plan and obtain post-observation feedback. Observe your assigned cohort peer teaching using his or her session plan and provide post-observation feedback.
- Optional: Observe a disciplinary faculty member’s teaching and hold a post-observation meeting to discuss what you observed.
- Using the Teaching Goals Inventory, develop a class session plan for a course you will likely teach in the future and meet with CTL consultant to discuss.
- Practice a portion of your plan during a cohort meeting and gather feedback from other participants.
- Optional: Observe a disciplinary faculty member’s teaching and hold a post-observation meeting to discuss what you observed.

- Second Statement of Reflection
- Teaching Goals Inventory Report
- Lesson Plan for Class/Lab Session
- Completed Pre-Teaching Observation Form for Cohort Peer
- Observation Report from Cohort Peer
