2017 E.C. Moore Symposium – Registration Now Open!

Registration for the 2017 E.C. Moore Symposium on Excellence in Teaching is now open. This year’s symposium will feature a keynote address by Dr. Jillian Kinzie, Associate Director of the Center for Postsecondary Research and the NSSE Institute at the IU Bloomington School of Education. The plenary address will be delivered by Rob Elliott, Lecturer in Computer and Information Technology at the School of Engineering and Technology at IUPUI and recipient of the 2016 IUPUI Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching.

The E.C. Moore Symposium brings the Indiana higher education community together to examine teaching excellence and the instructional strategies employed in various disciplines to encourage student learning. This year’s symposium will feature concurrent sessions, a poster session and presenters’ reception, a showcase of student ePortfolios, and other opportunities to interact with students and colleagues. The 2017 E.C. Moore Symposium will be held at the IUPUI Campus Center on Friday, March 3, 2017.

Kaltura: An Overview

In this hands-on workshop, Randy Newbrough, Jeani Young, and Nate Paritz will present an overview and ways to incorporate video into your course using Kaltura, IU's new video management service. Kaltura is available to all faculty, staff, and students and can be accessed through Canvas. Kaltura offers a private space to upload and share videos within your Canvas course. Faculty can easily share videos with students and likewise, students can share videos with instructors or the entire class. Bring your laptop so that you can follow along in your Canvas course and try out Kaltura.

Preventing and Managing Plagiarism

Promoting academic and professional integrity in students is a desired,  but implicit, course outcome in every discipline. A common form of academic misconduct particularly in writing-intensive courses is plagiarism. This behavior is not always obvious when you are in the midst of grading student work. This workshop will provide an overview of the types of academic misconduct defined by IUPUI's code of conduct, specifically discussing issues of plagiarism, and consider best practices to prevent, manage, and report plagiarism.  Attendees will learn how to use Turnitin, IU's plagiarism detection tool within their Canvas course. Attendees will have the opportunity to examine and interpret Turnitin's report for a variety of example compositions.

Creating and Managing Rubrics in Canvas

Rubrics provide a coherent set of criteria for evaluating student work and can streamline your grading process. In this face-to-face workshop participants will learn how to create rubrics in Canvas that can be used to clarify assignment expectations and make grading more consistent and transparent. Participants will also learn how to manage rubrics in Canvas, including how to use the same rubric for grading in multiple sections.   Participants are encouraged to bring their own laptops so that they can embed and modify rubrics in a Canvas course.

Collaborating Online with Zoom

Zoom is a new video conferencing and web collaboration software available to all faculty, students, and staff at Indiana University. Zoom makes it easy to meet with colleagues or students and share your screen, create breakout rooms, and/or record the meeting.

In this face-to-face workshop, we will start with an overview of how to use Zoom and the various use cases for collaborating with colleagues or students. Participants will then be invited to try Zoom on their own. If you have a laptop bring it along, otherwise laptops will be available for use.

In this workshop, participants will learn about the new online conference tool at Indiana University called Zoom.  Zoom is a conference tool that focuses on collaboration between users through audio/video communication, file sharing, and screen sharing. IU faculty, staff, and students are all eligible to create their own Zoom meeting room to host meetings. In this workshop, we will learn how users access their account, schedule and manage meetings, as well as how to use Zoom as an effective conferencing tool.

Getting students to come to class prepared can be a challenge but is essential to making in-class time productive. In this session, participants will learn strategies to guide students’ pre-class learning, to make explicit the relevance of pre-class work, and to assess students’ preparation.

Quality Matters at IU: Applying the Quality Matters Rubric to Online Courses

This workshop introduces faculty and staff to the Quality Matters (QM) Rubric and to the QM Process. Quality Matters is a nationally recognized quality assurance organization for online course design, and the QM Process is a faculty-led peer review process that uses the research-based standards (criteria) of the QM Rubric to certify online courses. Eventually, many online courses within the IU system will undergo the QM Process with the goal of achieving national QM recognition. Faculty may also use the QM Rubric as a guide to design online courses. And, for faculty who are interested, this course serves as a pre-requisite for QM's Peer Reviewer Course, which is a required course for faculty who seek certification as a QM Peer Reviewer, allowing them to participate in QM course reviews for courses created here at IU and at other universities.

The workshop will be offered as an in-person workshop at IUPUI on Friday, February 24th, from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. in University Library, UL 1130, with a one hour break for lunch. Participants are free to bring their own lunch or to take advantage of the many options available on campus. To receive the QM certificate of completion for this workshop, participants must be present for and participate in the entire workshop.


Online Test Proctoring by ProctorU: Q and A Session

ProctorU is one of the online test proctoring services currently being piloted at Indiana University. On Monday, February 27th, representatives from ProctorU will be on campus to meet with faculty, answer questions, hear concerns, and gather feedback. If you have been using either ProctorU or Examity, or if you would simply like to learn more about online proctoring at IU, please join us. Refreshments will be served.
