The IUPUI Center for Teaching and Learning is accepting proposals for the 2014 Edward C. Moore Symposium on Excellence in Teaching, which will take place Friday, April 4th, 2014. We hope that you will consider submitting a proposal, and encourage you to share this invitation and information with colleagues

In addition to our traditional call for proposals, this year we are offering a special call for proposals for an “Ignite” session.  Please note that you can submit no more than one traditional proposal and one “Ignite” proposal. Both the traditional call for proposals and the “Ignite” call for proposals can be viewed online.  For more information about the symposium visit http://ecmoore.iupui.edu.

Developing CEG Proposals

This session is designed for faculty members who are interested in applying for a 2014 Curriculum Enhancement Grant (CEG) and have questions about developing the proposal or about the three tracks available - the General, Special Focus in Support of IU Online, and the Intergroup Dialogue Initiative tracks. Information about the CEG initiative, proposal guidelines, how to write the proposal, and each of the tracks will be provided along with time for discussion and questions.

The CEG initiative is designed to provide faculty with support, time, and resources to implement projects to improve student learning and success at IUPUI and IUPU Columbus. In addition, it is expected that the grants will increase faculty competitiveness for external educational or curricular improvement grants and increase the number of faculty involved in pursuing the scholarship of teaching and learning. Individual faculty members can apply for up to $5,000. Teams of three or more faculty working on three or more courses can apply for a maximum of $15,000 per proposal. This is a two-part series about different cloud-based tools that IU provides, and how it can be used to support student learning, especially to promote student collaboration, class communication, and groupwork. Part one introduces the concept of cloud computing, the IUanyWare platform, and cloud-based storage tools such as Box@IU. This session will explore the more collaborative features of Box, IUanyWare and similar tools, and will emphasis their use in collaborative projects and creative approaches to teaching.  Part two will review the basics of cloud-based tools, the IUanyWare platform and cloud storage tools such as Box@IU.  Most of the time will be devoted to examining how these tools can be used to help students "create and collaborate" - to work together to produce and share resources.

Quality Matters - Applying the QM Rubric

Indiana University has subscribed to Quality Matters (QM) as a tool and process for the design, development, and ongoing review of online courses, especially those that are part of the IU Online initiative. The Applying the QM Workshop is QM's flagship workshop on the QM Rubric and the process of using the QM Rubric to review online courses. It is intended for a broad audience, including but not limited to faculty, instructional designers, administrators, and adjunct instructors who wish to understand more about the QM Rubric and process of course review.

This workshop will introduce faculty and staff to the QM Rubric and Process, sharing best practices for online course design. The QM Rubric is a research-based set of standards that can be used during the course design process. The QM Process is a peer review process that eventually will review many IU Online courses, with the goal of achieving QM Recognition for mature online courses in the near future. Also, the APPQMR is the pre-requisite for the Peer Reviewer Course, which is the required course to become a QM Peer Reviewer.

Participants will have one hour for lunch, and are free to bring their own lunch or take advantage of the many options in the Campus Center or across the street at the Tower Dining Hall. To receive the QM certificate of completion for this workshop, participants must be present for and participate in the entire workshop.

Digital Storytelling: A Hands-On Design and Application Workshop

This session is designed for those interested in implementing digital stories in their program or course and want to learn effective strategies for creating and assessing digital stories in a hand’s-on setting. Participants will create their own digital story, and identify resources to help their students create them on their own. You will learn about what makes for a great digital story, free resources available, information about copyright and intellectual property, digital literacy information for your students, and develop a tool you can use to assess student products.

Part of the digital storytelling process is the creation of a script. While we will have a prepared script that you can use, we would encourage those of you that want to show your script to your students to prepare a draft of a script related to your assignment prior to the start of the session. Please choose a single topic, and type/write out a script that is no longer than 2-3 minutes in length when read aloud (approximately a half page single-spaced).

For this session, we can provide a PC laptop, and encourage you to use a PC. We will be using Microsoft Photo Story 3 and recommend you download (free) it ahead of time if you are bringing your own device. If you are a Mac user, you are still welcome to bring your own device. It is recommended that Mac users use iMovie. Be aware that the tools and process will vary between these two systems.

Advancing Learning with Technology Symposium

The IUPUI Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) is accepting proposals for the 2014 Advancing Learning with Technology Symposium (ALT) which will take place on Friday, February 28, 2014 from 9 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. in University Library. We hope you will consider submitting a proposal, and we encourage you to share this invitation and information with your colleagues. The deadline has been extended to Wednesday, December 18, 2013.

The ALT Symposium brings the higher education community together to examine and showcase instructional technology strategies that impact learning across a variety of disciplines. The program will include 50-minute breakout sessions as well as a virtual keynote address by Kevin Warbach of the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. Possible formats include panel and roundtable discussions, lecture-discussion, interactive workshops and poster presentations. Proposals that include graduate students or involve student presenters are welcome.
