Engaging Students in Online Courses
When: Wednesday, February 24, 2010 | 01:00 PM-02:30 PM Where: UL1125M Event Organizer: Randy Newbrough
To thrive in the fast-changing, highly-competitive niche of online education, institutions eagerly explore new learning tools. Synchronous learning–live and interactive chat–is one approach that has been shown to engage students and enhance learning. There are a number of different applications designed to provide a synchronous learning environment. Adobe Connect and Wimba Classroom are two well-known examples. From any perspective, synchronous learning has notable benefits:
• Forward-thinking administrators recognize online courses as fertile ground for developing a competitive advantage. Those schools offering quality, leading-edge technology and added-value for students–such as synchronous learning–will shine in a growing marketplace.
• Educators grapple with familiar challenges, made even more complex by a modern learning environment. Teachers need online methods that create a connection, keep students engaged in learning, and provide valuable new ways to assess student progress.
• Students bring expectations with them to class. Their ideals for how online interaction will take place are often based on the fresh, new communications technology that they employ in their personal lives.
Despite evident benefits, some educators are still reluctant to incorporate synchronous methods. Faculty members may shy away from online chat and similar options because they fear they will be too much work; too challenging from a technical standpoint; and add minimal value to the course.
In this 90-minute presentation, Mike Scheuermann, Ph.D., will provide a thorough handbook for incorporating synchronous elements into online course design–and how real-time chat can take online learning effectiveness to the next level.
Mike E. Scheuermann holds a Ph.D. in Education from Drexel University. His areas of interest include online learning and nontraditional students. In this seminar, he shares his expertise about synchronous course elements, based on years of experience, and input from students as well as other faculty members.

Perhaps an in-class exercise is not engaging all students. It might be time to adjust your syllabus to reflect changes in your course philosophy. Maybe you are ready to convert some of the more passive elements of your course to active learning strategies.
Submit your problem issue for a tune-up to Lisa Contino at lcontino@iupui.edu before February 26. Five problems will be selected for the live scrutiny and creative power of a team of your peers. Using the fishbowl technique, (also known as inside-outside circles), we will all participate in the experience and apply the outcomes to our own courses.

Carl Wieman, Ph.D. - Science Education Lecture
When: Thursday, March 11, 2010 | 09:30 AM-10:30 AM Where: University Library - Lilly Auditorium Event Organizer: Randy Newbrough
The Center for Teaching and Learning has invited 2001 Nobel Prize Laureate in Physics, Carl Wieman, Ph.D. to the IUPUI campus as part of its CTL Winter Lecture Series. This lecture series honors nationally recognized scholars who have made a contribution to their discipline as well as teaching and learning within their discipline.
Guided by experimental tests of theory and practice, science has advanced rapidly in the past 500 years. Guided primarily by tradition and dogma, science education meanwhile has remained largely medieval. Research on how people learn is now revealing how many teachers badly misinterpret what students are thinking and learning from traditional science classes and exams. However, research is also providing insights on how to do much better. The combination of this research with modern information technology is setting the stage for a new approach that can provide the relevant and effective science education for all students that is needed for the 21st century. Wieman will discuss the failures of traditional educational practices, even as used by “very good” teachers, and the successes of some new practices and technology that characterize this more effective approach, and how these results are highly consistent with findings from cognitive science.
